Southern Galatia was attached to the Northern, Ethnic Kingdom of the Gauls by Antony in 36 BC.

For more about Quirinius, see B.Levick, "Roman Colonies of Southern Asia Minor", Appendix Five.

For notes here about Quirinius, see note #2 in 7 BC, and notes to be added in the years 5-2 BC.

The Homanadensian War fits into the years 5-2 BC, during the gaps in the text of Dio Cassius.

The major sources for 6 BC are the NT, Dio Cassius and Josephus.

To be more specific...

Dio Cassius, Book 55, Chapter 9 tells all about 6 BC.

and...

Josephus' Antiquities, Book 17, Chapters 1,2&3 tell ALL about the events of 6 BC, with a couple of extra flashbacks.

and...

Joseph & Mary's flight to Egypt is recorded in Matthew 2:13-15

The detail about Legion 12 moving this year is my own reconstruction.

We know Legio XII Fulminata moved to Syria (probably from Egypt) at some time before 14 AD, and so did Legio X Fretensis (from Macedonia). But we don't know exactly when.

We do know, however, that ONE of those two legions had to be in Syria before 4 BC, when Josephus tells us that Syria had 3 Legions.(The other two - III Gallica and VI Ferrata - had been there for decades.)

It could have been any time, but the Parthian presence in Armenia (put together with Tiberius' withdrawal) gives Augustus a reason to shore up Syria NOW.

And Egypt was farther away from instability, in these years, than Macedonia. So Fulminata was probably the first one to go, no matter when it happened.

Anyway, this isn't a major point. I just wanted to have names for the Legions, when we get to 4 BC! :)

Why's that matter?

Because NAMES make better reading! And the facts are still going to be in these footnotes.

So that's BOTH sides covered. Facts. AND good reading! ;)

Actually, that's kind of my goal for this whole project.
